Get Kids Going

I am running this year's Great North Run in aid of Get Kids Going, a charity that provides sports wheelchairs for youngsters.

But I don't want to stop there. This year I have pledged to do another half marathon the week after, Run to the Beat in Greenwich, London, for the same cause. I hope the thought of me doing half marathons two Sundays in a row gets you to dig deep!

Charity run

In June I wrote about Alexandra Lines, a talented music student and DJ who died aged just 22 of a brain tumour caused by skin cancer. Click here to read more.

Alex's parents said it was their daughter's wish to raise money for cancer charities.

Next month I am taking part in the Great South Run, a 10-mile course in Portsmouth, to raise money in Alex's name for the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign and Leukaemia Research.

Drugs gang

Drugs workers in Portsmouth say they are coping with a crisis after dealers descended on the city this summer selling half-price cocaine and heroin.

The gang targeted rehab clinics and homeless people with business cards advertising their cheap deals.

It comes as Portsmouth is revealed in a report as the cheapest place to buy ecstasy in the UK, with prices as low as 50p a pill.

Film showing

Red Florence, a short film I shot in 2002 at the European Social Forum in Italy, is being shown at the Portobello Film Festival this evening.

It is part of an evening of films with a protest theme, followed by DJs including Fun-da-mental and Amit from Metalheadz.

Sail 8

"Worse things happen at sea," Granny used to say when I was growing up and I used to wonder what she was talking about.

This weekend I finally found out when I got sent on a stormy 14-hour Channel crossing to report on Sail 8, Bob Geldof's bid to bring French G8 protesters to Britain on a flotilla of boats.

I left Gosport on Friday night bound for Cherbourg with the four-strong crew of the Supertaff yacht. Heavy weather turned back many other boats and the four that did make it found no-one waiting to travel back with them.

In memory of Alex

Alex Lines was a music student and DJ, with a huge circle of friends and her own website of their nights out.

Last month she died after two years of treatment for malignant melanoma, a tragedy branded "death by suntan" by the tabloids, to the distress of her family.

Hi again

I'm back online after a stint in Oxford working on television coverage of the general election campaign.

On election night I helped cover the Oxford East count at the Town Hall, where sitting Labour MP Andrew Smith had his 10,000 majority slashed to 950 after an 11% swing to the Liberal Democrats.

A surprise 1,500 votes went to a independent candidate who had changed his name to Honest T Blair and was running on a New Loony/anti-war ticket. Labour party activists told me that at least 1,000 of those were from their supporters, bamboozled by the name BLAIR on the ballot paper.

The atmosphere was like a boxing match. There was even a real punch-up involving rival supporters of Labour and the Independent Working Class Association and the police threw some people out.

All in all, one of the most fun nights I've had all year. Even better than a sleepless night at a rave.

105th birthday girl

Nellie Scott was born in the reign of Queen Victoria and has been drawing her pension since before Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.

Today she is celebrating her 105th birthday at her rest home in Southampton.

Football club

In the shadow of Southampton's Premiership ground, a new youth football team is struggling to survive.

Set up by a group of Bangladeshi friends to help keep youngsters out of trouble, the club may close through lack of funding.

Cinderella murder

It has been called the Cinderella murder case.

A young woman was found dead at her home in Portsmouth, a trail of footmarks in blood leading from her body. If police can identify the marks, they could solve the case.

I've been following the detective leading the hunt for the killer of Felicity Paget, 23, during some of his enquiries in the last few weeks.

Quake Aid

When it comes to raising money for the victims of disasters, maybe it's not just the big stars who can make a noise.

Six musicians from bands in Hampshire have come together to make a record for the tsunami appeal.

The song premieres at a benefit concert at Portsmouth's Wedgewood Rooms tonight, where a test pressing of 200 copies will be on sale.

Roxanne's fairy godmother

A generous American reader has put a smile back on Roxanne's face, the teenage girl with alopecia who lost her savings on eBay.

The 16-year-old saved up to buy the hairpiece after suffering teasing from classmates about her bald patches - but months later she was distraught when it had still not arrived.

Roxanne and eBay

When Roxanne was 13, she was horrified to find her hair had started to fall out. Now nearly three years later, most of it has gone.

After suffering taunts from classmates and waiting a year for a synthetic NHS hairpiece, she saved up to buy a luxurious wig of long, brown, highlighted human hair on eBay.

Tucked underneath the paves of Southampton High Street is a medieval vault. Once used to store a merchant's wares, tonight it is to be transformed into an hidden cinema...

Want to BEyONd TV?

When news breaks, they fix it.

This weekend sees the 2004 outing of the BEyONd TV documentary festival.

The packed-to-bursting extravaganza, in its fifth year, is organised by Undercurrents and kicks off this Friday at Patti Pavillion in Swansea.

More than 30 films will be squeezed into two days of screenings, plus film-making masterclasses, live music, DJs and a Q&A by two Swansea stars of Channel Four's Wife Swap.

A fast and furious three-minute cut of my film Red Florence is being shown on Saturday afternoon, some time between 4.30pm and 6pm, as part of the International Themes bit.

Indymedia festival

This weekend, Sheffield Indymedia is holding alt.doc.fest, three days of indie documentaries, culture and networking/hanging out. My film Red Florence is being shown on Sunday.

Film evening

Everyone is welcome at Chichester Cinema tomorrow, where my film Red Florence is being shown, as part of an evening of independent shorts.

The event is entitled The Flicks: Short Film Café and is a showcase of work by film-makers from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, supported by Southampton film production group City Eye.

Film showing

It is November 2002 and Britain is on the brink of war with Iraq. Thousands of young people have travelled to Italy from the UK for a million-strong peace march.

Drummers, dancers, clowns and huge puppets unite under the slogan "Another Europe Is Possible".

With an orginal samba and techno soundtrack, my film Red Florence aims to capture some of the colour and excitement of the first ever European Social Forum.

It is to be screened for the first time at this year's European Social Forum in London from 15 - 17 October.

The final programme for the forum has not yet been published, but I will post details as soon as I have them. Everyone is welcome.

Claw war

Do you remember Jonathan Lander, the Dorset fisherman and single dad whose boat and lobster pots were wrecked by vandals?

The Lobster Liberation Front has claimed responsibility and is warning of worse to come.

They said: "The war against the lobster industry has begun. We will attack anywhere, at any time, and pots will be smashed, boats sunk and sea life liberated."

Moon river

They say journalists are in the gutter. Some of us are also gazing up at the stars.

The Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn enters the planet's orbit today. On Christmas Day, a probe will detach from the mothership before landing on the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon.

But will the craft splash or crunch when it lands? Some experts say the freezing world is covered with huge oily seas of liquid cooking gas.
